Alliance Defending Freedom
Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) is a religious legal advocacy group founded in 1994. Its goal is to protect and preserve religious liberty, focusing on pursuing this mission through litigation, public policy advocacy, education, and training. ADF is headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona. The president of ADF as of January 2017 was Alan Sears.
In 2004, ADF launched a campaign against publishing industry censorship practices. The organization drew attention to the issue when it won a lawsuit against the National Advertising Review Council regarding excluding Christian-themed books from the Gideons’ Bible distribution program at bookstores in America.
Alliance Defending Freedom has been one of the leading opponents of attempts to restrict access to alcohol and tobacco products in the United States through legislative or administrative actions. In March 2005, ADF filed an amicus brief with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, arguing that state health laws like Proposition 56 in Oklahoma, which set minimum prices on tobacco products, were unconstitutional under federal and state law.
Alliance Defending Freedom is a plaintiff in the consolidated case of “Planned Parenthood et al. v. Casey” (2007), as well as several other cases on the issue of abortion, including its involvement in the Hill v. Colorado case in 1992 and its support for the legal fight to overturn Roe v. Wade. The organization has also challenged proposals that would criminalize the advertising of contraception and abortion to minors, calling such laws unconstitutional under the First Amendment and federal law, respectively (see ADF’s Prager U guide). ADF has also filed lawsuits against state governments that ban book distribution or require parental consent for minors to receive condoms from doctors’ offices.
According to the ADF website, the organization’s legal focus includes “seminary rights; school choice issues; marriage and family issues; abortion, embryo-destructive research, assisted suicide and euthanasia; freedom of speech, press and religion; governmental authority and sexual regulation, including issues related to homosexuality; religious expression in schools through student activities, sex education and other school programs; church-state matters in public schools (including vouchers); speech codes at colleges and universities.” The ADF is involved with various cases that touch on these issues.
