Alliance Defending Freedom
Alliance Defending Freedom is a legal non-profit organization based in Scottsdale, Arizona, that aims to promote religious freedom, the sanctity of life, and marriage and family. In particular, they focus on defending clients who have been targeted for their Christianity or other belief systems.
In court documents and complaints filed with government agencies, ADF has received media attention for representing clients against same-sex marriages, the separation of church and state, and the rights of religious groups to recognize marriage. ADF is headed by a board of seven trustees. Its founder is Alan Sears, a former attorney in the Arizona Attorney General’s office who also served as chairman of Arizona’s Republican Party from 1994 to 1997. ADF was incorporated on October 1, 1999, initially as Alliance Defense Fund.
In today’s society, there are many groups that try to undermine traditional values in the United States. Because of this, there is a need for individuals to help protect religious freedom as well as the sanctity of life and marriage. Alliance Defending Freedom ensures that these three values are upheld when they represent people in court cases nationwide.
It is important for groups like this one to be able to represent individuals who feel that their rights have been violated by some sort of law. People are very passionate about their beliefs, and sometimes the law will not agree with them. If these beliefs are allowed to be compromised, then these groups may not be able to hold firm to their religious belief system.
In Arizona, Alliance Defending Freedom has been very successful at representing clients in cases such as the RFRA Challenge, where they represented the owners of a Christian bakery against the state’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act. In this case, the owners were accused of violating Arizona’s RFRA by refusing to make a cake for an event celebrating gay marriage. This case was a landmark ruling because it involved the central argument of how people should be allowed to practice their faith without having to violate those beliefs.
Another important case in Arizona was the “Sanctuary City Law. This case was also very large because it involved multiple organizations and groups nationwide. The law stated that it would be illegal for any police officers in Arizona to work with federal immigration officials in order to protect illegals who are in this country illegally. One of the main groups against this law was ADF. They argued that this law would put the people of Arizona at a greater risk for violence and crime to occur. In 2015, a federal judge ruled that the Sanctuary City Law was unconstitutional because it restricted the enforcement of federal immigration laws. Read this article for additional information.
