Promoting Diversity and Quality Life on Roosevelt Island
Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation was created in 1984 by New York State to run and manage operations on Roosevelt Island. The corporation ensures that the island improves the lives of residents of the region by providing solutions that are environmentally friendly and safe for the public.
A neighborhood called Roosevelt Island is named after former US President and disability rights activist Franklin D. Roosevelt. The neighborhood has been doing its part to protect the environment through the corporation partnering with Motorgate Garage which provides renewable energy for vehicles. It had two waterfront walkways in the Island’s Southpoint Park repaired and expanded.
In October 2022, Akeem Jamal was announced as the Assistant Vice President of Communications and Public Affairs at Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC). Jamal holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Media Studies and an MBA acquired from Fordham University and Pace University Lubin School of Business respectively.
Before joining Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation, he served as a member of the Muslim Advisory Team of Yonkers and led them in seeking justice for Muslim students who did not have Muslim holiday’s adhered to in public schools. He is also taking part in supporting people living with disabilities to get better lives at Richmond Community Services as a member of the Board of Directors.
Similar to his acts to support minority groups, Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation has promoted diversity, equality, and inclusivity by recognizing those living with disabilities. In corporation with the Roosevelt Island Disabilities Association, the corporation announced its plans to celebrate the 31st anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act in the year 2021. Currently, the members of the administration are gender balanced, five being male and four being women.
Akeem Jamal had also been advocating for quality lives for the general public and environmental protection. With his coming into the corporation, the island has significantly improved in terms of infrastructure and attractiveness, been spiced up by the arts, and has upgraded parks throughout the entire space. With his contribution, the corporation was able to put up a pickleball court, which is believed to attract more tourists and make Roosevelt Island better.
