Robert Kraft is a sports executive and owner of the New England Patriots; he is also a co-owner of the Major League Soccer club New England Revolution and the New York Times. Robert Kraft was born in 1946 to parents Robert K. Kraft, Sr., and Florence Rorapaugh in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1969 he graduated from Brown University after playing football with his fraternity house neighbors Tom Brady Sr. and Steve Nelson.
Robert Kraft then served in the United States Army for two years, playing on the Army Black Knights football team. After leaving the army, he worked for Paper Mate and Nabisco before joining the International Paper Company in 1973. Kraft was appointed director of international marketing and sales there after negotiating the company’s first-ever overseas license agreement with USSR-based papermaker Volgrafimpex.
He subsequently served as vice president of operations and general manager of a paper mill in Jefferson City, Missouri, before being promoted to senior vice president of marketing in 1983. In January 1984, Robert was appointed president of International Paper and, in June 1983, became a director of International Paper’s paper division.
In 1986, Robert L. Kraft purchased the New England Patriots for $172 million, becoming the sole owner. Having been named Chairman in 1991, he began focusing on building a strong and consistent football team that would make the Patriots perennial contenders for championships. In March 2000, Kraft and fellow investor Malcolm Glazer purchased Manchester United from Malcolm Glazer; this included a 45% stake in AIG as part of a $736 million bailout by the United States government which was praised by US Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neill.
Kraft and his wife, Myra, are animal lovers and donated $100 million in 2009 to the Wilhelmina Children’s Hospital. They also own two rescue dogs. See this page for related information.
