Vijay Eswaran is the Executive Chairman of the Qi Group, one of the largest and most profitable conglomerates of companies in Hong Kong. Vijay is a business philosopher, philanthropist, and author.

Early Life and Education

Vijay Eswaran was born in Malaysia on October 7, 1960. He studied at the London School of Economics and graduated with a socio-economics and political science degree. While in school, he was the first to sponsor a mathematical olympiad and a member of the Malaysian National Sports Organisation’s debating team.

Vijay began his business career while studying at university by joining the board of the local Indian restaurant chain Jazzy’s as an employee and later as chairman. He became the youngest person in Malaysian history to receive venture capital funding from K-Lite Investments while still in college, which he used to launch DM Technologies into business.

Philanthropy

Vijay has been a force in the global nonprofit community. He is a board member of Save the Children Fund, Save the Children UK, and JDRF India. He founded itiSEEC in partnership with Harvard University to provide leadership training to Indian nonprofits. Vijay is also on the board of Lifeboat Foundation, which helps people displaced by disasters in Asia, and a member of the Global Entrepreneurship Development Institute’s advisory board.

Eswaran Emphasizes Community as Key to Recovery

Vijay Eswaran, in his many presentations, has said that there are three key factors for a country to recover from the recession:

  • Community and a sense of shared identity.
  • Social participation and connection both within the family and to other people.
  • Ambition coupled with self-belief.

He has pointed out that the countries that have instilled these three things in their people have been able to get back on their feet after the recession. In addition, the role of government and leaders is critical, and they must take action to mitigate the damage caused by the recession and help their people recover.
