Justin Nelson on Repairing Broken Trust at JP Morgan

Trust rarely breaks cleanly, and Justin Nelson has built part of his reputation on how he responds when it does. The Managing Director at J.P. Morgan Private Bank, who has spent nearly three decades in wealth management, argues that the moment after a mistake matters more than the mistake itself.

Admission Comes First

“When there is some type of break there, the first thing you can do with anybody is admit it,” Nelson says. He is blunt about what happens when advisors choose a different path. “If you don’t admit that mistake was made or you did something that violated someone’s trust, if you try to cover that up, it’s never going to get repaired.”

That principle guides how Nelson leads his team of 20 professionals at JP Morgan, who together manage more than $11 billion for clients across hedge funds, private equity, and real estate. In a business built on discretion and long memory, a single unaddressed error can undo years of goodwill.

Time, Honesty, and a Second Chance

Nelson is careful not to promise an easy fix. “Trust can totally be rebuilt, it takes time and honesty,” he says, adding that genuine repair depends on humility rather than persuasion. “You just have to be yourself and genuine with people and hope the other side gives you a second chance.”

That framing sets a bar many advisors avoid discussing publicly. Financial services rewards confidence, and admitting fault can feel like a liability. Justin Nelson JP Morgan decades of client retention suggest the opposite is true, and that owning a mistake quickly is often what keeps a relationship intact for the long run.

Clients with considerable wealth tend to have low tolerance for excuses, particularly when money tied to a family’s future is involved. Nelson’s willingness to speak plainly about failure, rather than deflect it, appears to be part of what convinces clients to stay through the inevitable rough patches that any long term financial relationship eventually encounters.
