In 1984, Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation was founded to revitalize Roosevelt Island in New York City and promote community engagement. Over time, RIOC has become an innovative leader in affordable housing, green business solutions and cultural events benefitting local residents and visitors alike. Shelton has helped create this corporation that offers residents a range of recreation options. The company is known for its residential parks, monuments, and gardens. Today, numerous acres are under the management’s control, and experts agree the ROIC has created a new and captivating way for visitors to enjoy this piece of land in New York City. Mr Haynes graduated from Hampton University B.A. Sociology Administration. Many projects have been completed, and many more are planned under his management, including a Pickleball court, bridges, etc. Shelton Haynes is recognized as the first person to develop affordable housing in NYC. His vision and commitment have changed the face of this island for generations to come. He is known for appointing a diverse management team with people of all backgrounds. He strongly believes in diversity, equality, and community empowerment. Over these past years as President & CEO of Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation, Shelton Haynes has supported his community in many ways, such as helping the homeless, supporting senior citizens and providing job opportunities for youth. During the time of COVID-19, RIOC introduced free testing centers for residents. The corporation provides a variety of recreational activities, such as parks, museums, and youth center development, amongst others. He has been recognized by many local, state and federal officials for his commitment to diversity and community development. His work guaranteeing that public housing was available to everyone who needed it led him to a position as President and CEO of the corporation. Haynes has spent his career acquiring experience in real estate operations, leadership and management. He is responsible for managing all departments in RIOC, including the Roosevelt Commercial Building, which mirrors its focus on energy-saving efforts and environmental consciousness. In Roosevelt Island, Shelton Haynes is known for his strong work ethic and leadership skills. Haynes’s tenure at RIOC has been characterized by his progressive approach to urban development. This includes analyzing how historical buildings can be reused for modern-day or alternative uses and working with communities to integrate a sense of culture and heritage alongside physical redevelopment projects.
