Meet Kelcy Warren — The Visionary Behind Energy Transfer
Kelcy Warren is an American businessman who has been in the pipeline industry for years. He was born and raised in Gladewater, Texas. Kelcy was the youngest in a family of four. His father worked as a ditch digger and later as a field clerk for Sun Oil. In one of his interviews, Kelcy says that his father never went beyond high school, but he still had a good grasp of life.
His mother worked in a department store and never even completed high school. The fact that she wasn’t fortunate enough to advance her studies didn’t stop her from being a tremendous influence in his life—her desire to see her children become educated pushed Kelcy to excel in his studies.
The lack of enough money pushed his parents to look for alternative ways to provide for their family. One of these ways was to open a trailer park. Kelcy Warren himself started doing odd jobs when he was only 12.
Kelcy Warren always wanted to do well in life. He once asked his high school counselor about the highest-paying job one could get with a four-year degree. The counselor’s response was engineering. Kelcy took his counselor’s advice and enrolled in a civil engineering course at the University of Texas at Arlington. This was in 1974, and he paid all his tuition fees using the money he had earned in his teenage years.
It was at the University of Texas at Arlington that Kelcy got a scholarship to work on a research project that was sponsored by the National Science Foundation. He went on to win the top award thanks to his project on methane gas production. This was his turning point.
Upon his graduation in 1978, he was employed by Lone Star Gas Company as a pipeline design engineer. He later joined Endevco, where he advanced into the commercial aspect of energy development. In 1992, he acquired Endevco with the help of a partner and sold it four years later. He then co-founded Energy Transfer, where he is still the chairman and CEO.
